My wife and I are from California and just got off our cruise. I have been dying to try some Texas BBQ and a few locals told me that I won't find it here in Galveston. Oh how they were wrong! I kept hope and found Pennies! I wish I could give this pl... ace 10 stars. The staff is super nice and friendly and make you feel like family. On to the food. The ribs, brisket, and chicken almost made me cry. I had to stop myself from licking my fingers after every bite. The coleslaw was also so damn good. The photos I took don't do it justice because I was already tearing it up. On top of that, Cameron blessed us with some pork tamales that were out of this world. The masa was perfectly soft and their flavor reminded me of Christmas. ON TOP OF THAT, they had this awesome chocolate dessert that my wife and I were fighting over. If you are a true chocoholic like me, you cannot skip it. I wish this place expanded to California, but if not, best believe we will be back when in Galveston. Absolutely thrilled to say that I've had the most incredible tamales from some truly amazing individuals. If you happen to find yourself in the Galveston region, you absolutely must experience this restaurant. It's a true hidden gem!

Best tamales on the island hands down

On a rainy day in Galveston, we came upon this place while driving around. These are the best tacos ever!! We will be back. We give this place our highest recommendation.

So my friend and I were on our way to eat brunch at sugar and Rye. We were driving the inner roads and pennies caught my friends eye. We got done with brunch and headed over. It was close to close time, but so glad we stopped. They were out of fresh ... tamales so we got the frozen ones, oh my gosh!!! And the sauce, perfect!!! We got the last of the ribs too... really good. Can't wait to go back for more tamales and get some brisket and some banana pudding and cake...so ready! Read more
